Abstract: We estimate the effects of road improvements on intranational trade cost using variations in firms' export routing choices. Our estimation uncovers substantial heterogeneity in transporatation intensity across sectors. In a spatial equilibrium model calibrated to China's economy, we show that accounting for such sectoral heterogeneity and the production linkages across regions is crucial in evaluating the aggregate and distirbutional effects of road improvements.
